The Euro, Tony
Blair, and History . . .
So you blokes will soon be trading in the venerable Pound for the upstart Euro!! Good God, how can you do it? Over here the press has our British cousins following Lemming-like the notorious Tony Blair into the sea of assimilation with mainland Europe following an anticipated landslide victory in the upcoming general election. Isn’t it clear to you that when the United States of Europe becomes a reality Britain’s historical sovereignty, her honour, her traditions, her centuries of law and justice will lie prostrate before the graven images of the false gods of global economics? In a few years we are, if these accounts are accurate, to witness the Sceptered Isle becoming but one of a number of minor European states in a federation where France and Germany will dominate politically and economically, the Hague will judge British Citizens under law not of their own creation, and North Sea Oil will no longer be freely traded on the world market but will be sold on the Continent at a price established not by economic forces but by wizened gnomes who care not an iota what the British people need or think. And British Beef? Your farmers better stick with turnips and cabbage. The people of the United Kingdom, of England, of Wales, of Scotland, of Northern Ireland will soon be pilloried by the Euro and left without the resources needed to end their involvement should they so desire. No longer will you have control over your own destiny. They think you are something less than civilized, those leaders of France and Germany. They think the same thing of us. France has already admitted publicly that a state of economic warfare exists between the European Union and the United States. How quickly they forget D-Day the sixth of June when thousands of British, Canadian, and American soldiers slogged ashore on the blood soaked beaches of Normandy to free France from the nazi yoke. Within the last few weeks Herr G. Schroeder of the German Republic tipped his hand making no bones about his plans for a European Superstate. The recent pronouncements by Monsieur Jospin calling for “an EU-Wide ‘economic government’ harmonized business taxes, and a European Constitution” (The Telegraph online edition) has caused Mr. Blair some embarrassment but clearly not enough to slow down the march to the inevitable end of the United Kingdom as a separate political entity. History makes my point, I think. Until the French Revolution, France pretty much dominated continental Europe. By a series of successful strategic moves, Great Britain was successful in keeping Paris out of her major spheres of influence, once they were driven from North America. And although the two superpowers clashed from time to time, the balance was pretty stable for a long time. Then Came Napoleon. For a while that upstart emperor ruled most of Europe brought under French dominion by a cadre of fanatically loyal soldiers. He made the mistake of invading Russia and was eventually defeated by a coalition under Wellington and Blucher…a balance of power was re-established. But British arms had now been used on The Mainland and would again over the next hundred and thirty years. Germany under the Iron Duke (Bismarck) was determined to become a military power to be reckoned with. The German psyche loves to follow a strong leader however blindly. It must be something in the Teutonic genes or perhaps the drinking water. Germany quickly overwhelmed the French in a little fiasco called the Franco-Prussian War. The French military had been pretty idle since Napoleon except overseas. Like most armies they had been trained to fight the last war and were unprepared for the German onslaught. Treaties…..alliances….Europe perched on the Brink of War which erupted in 1914 WHEN GERMANY INVADED FRANCE. Britain, honoring its agreement, loyal to its promise, sent over troops. That war dragged on for four bloody years and wiped out the flower of young European manhood. World War One was the bloodiest in history; one source sets the casualties at twenty-three million. But WW1 solved nothing. Round two was fought across the globe from 1939-1945. Again Germany invaded France, you guys sent in an army to defend the French Republic. After a brief and futile resistance the French Republic capitulated shamefully and left the British holding the bag as it were at Dunkirk. An allied coalition composed primarily of British, American, Canadian, and Russian armed might eventually restored order to Europe…for a time, anyway. WW2…lots of flack to go around, but The British and Americans, while not completely blameless as to cause and occasional atrocity, clearly stood on the moral high ground from the beginning. There has never been another generation like the one that pulled us from the Great Depression and defeated the Axis powers all within a span of fifteen years or so. Post War Europe has been a time of rebuilding, military and economic power. The two most successful continental nations are….amazingly enough…France and Germany. Think for a moment. What, therefore, has been the goal of these two countries since Napoleonic era? The answer, of course, is to be pre-eminent on the European continent. Having tried and failed by force of arms, they are now attempting supremacy through economic means. And if this means a European Union with them at the head, so be it. England, Italy, Spain and the other separate nations will find themselves in a continually diminished role until they cease to exist. Herr Schroeder will accomplish in his time what neither Von Bismarck nor Adolph Hitler was able to in theirs. BEWARE THE EURO; BEWARE OF ENTANGLING CONTINENTAL ALLIANCES. Ciao
