can't be your primary focus if you're after the big money. [Internet Marketing Chronicles, January 6, 1999] It is quite astonishing to think how quickly the Internet has become a vehicle for "electronic commerce" - the so-called "e-commerce". Only two or three years ago few would have had the foresight to imagine how rapidly it would expand and how widespread it would become. Look at what the experts now believe ...
Relative to the U.S.A., and perhaps Australia, where both the Internet and e-commerce have become quite sophisticated, in the U.K. it is still in its infancy - partly because of high telephone costs. But the situation is evolving quickly and opportunities do exist to make money. Of course, there are fraudsters out there as everywhere else and you are advised to be careful. ![]() Avenues of Approach There
are a number of avenues open to making money on the Internet depending
upon how ambitious you are, how much money you aim to make. Here are the
main avenues:-
Even Amazon can't do the Impossible!
Do you really believe Amazon is losing money, day-after-day,just because they like doing so? Any serious company on the Net is working to a long-term vision, a solid plan. They have banked millions of dollars on it! Your first step should always be to make a business plan taking into account both your short-term and long-term objectives (as all businesses should). Map out where you - realistically - intend to be in 6 months, 12 months, 2 years time. Work out stages in your business plan, and how you are going to go about achieving it. This could - probably will - involve much research and planning. In other words, as we said before, it invoves work! MLM Schemes and the Like All sorts of different programmes are being set up every day to help users make money. There are many different types of programmes out there - such as multi-level marketing (MLM), surfbars, cashbars, affiliate programmes, advertising matrixes, startpage programmes, banner-advertising programmes, computer-work programmes, commission programmes, and more. Don't believe so-called "Get Rich Quick" schemes. There's nothing for nothing. Like most businesses you have to input some time and effort to get the rewards. Take a look to see what kind of programme you're interested in and join up. The key is to find a programme that fits in with your goals and the time you have available. Make sure it is something you can handle and have fun doing it as well. Never overlook the "fun" element - always aim to enjoy what you're doing. With some programmes you don't actually have to do anything e.g. the adbar, cashbar, or startpage programmes. On the other hand some plans - e.g. MLM, affiliate programmes and banner programmes - require some effort on your part. If you are going to go into an affiliate or MLM programme I would highly reccomend that you look into their submission programmes as well. They are a great help. You can also use "FFA" sites (Free for All) links sites to help you as well. There are also safelists ('opt-in' lists) you can buy which will target your audience and send your message exactly where it will be seen best. I don't recommend posting to News Groups - this usually will result in a spamming lesson learened the hard way and you don't want to do that. However Message Boards and Billboard advertising on the Net is another thing. Look for these and place ads frequently. These are a great way to get your site noticed as well. Steps to Online Success If you have a product or service that you sell on the Internet, you may want to develop and set up your own Associate Programme. An Associate Programme is the least risky, least expensive way, by far, to acquire new customers and to explode your sales in a short period of time. It sure beats the heck out of paying for advertising up front. Why not pay for advertisers only when a sale is made … the ultimate way to advertise. You probably expect me to start raving about "the great programme I joined" and try to talk you into that. But no, I'm not for joining these 'great opportunities' at all. I do not trust 95% of them. So I won't tell you to do so! Instead, below you'll find a few free tips about making money on your own homepage. It's only a few steps you need to take to get started, and if you do it right it will work! The bottomline is that this information is really free. The only "catch" is that some of the links I'm about to give you are links to my own website! Assuming you have a website, the below steps are the best you can take to generate (some) income. To be able to make money from your site you must at least have visitors! To generate traffic to your site, see the free resources page. There you'll find some links to (free) search-engine submitters and other traffic generating resources. If you don't have a website yet get one but if possible do not use a free hosting service to build your online business! There are several reasons for this but the most important ones are: Nobody takes "business sites" at free hosting services seriously and there is no guarantee that they will still be in business by next month! If their service is withdrawn or goes down - for whatever reason, maybe a change of policy arising from a takeover or merger - so does yours (including the money you spend promoting it!). To illustrate something else that can happen if you don't have the security of your own webspace. Until recently Xoom.com was one of the best free hosting services around. Suddenly they changed their terms of service and they start showing a large (advertising) bar on top of every site they hosted. The tips and links below have been proven succesful for lots of people that make money online. (Links will open in a new browser-window.)
If books or music is everything you live for, build your own online shop! If you hate reading, there's absolutely no reason you should join Amazon or a similar .. You're wasting your time .. Make sure you create a website about the things that meet your interests. After thajoin the proper affiliate or referral programmes and start making money from the links you provide to them. Earning potential: from a few dollars/month to hundreds/month You shouldn't rely on one service or affiliate programme for your income. If they go down, you go down too .. ! Earning potential: unlimited. Affiliate programmes are a great way to earn some extra income, but selling your own services or products is a much better way to make money on the net! You can sell anything on the net. For example: do you love playing guitar? Why not start a website about playing guitar. Ad some free content (like a short course?) people will come back for and start stelling guitar-strings, guitar-related (E)books and music - hey, how about CD's from Eric Clapton or Mark Knopfler? Like cooking? Love children? How about a site about these topics? Anything that interests you, will most certainly be of interest for thousands of others! Don't forget: there are millions of people on the web and thousands of them probably share the same hobby.. Best of all, even if you start selling your own products, you can still link to the affiliate - or referral programs.. To be able to cash payments, I urge you to make sure you can accept credit-card payments. Do yourself a favour and make sure you can. About 95% of the payments I receive come via credit-cards. Earning potential: unlimited. Give away free stuff. Offer free downloads, like E-books, offer a free links page, anything that makes people come back to your site. They should re-visit often. Provide a free mailinglisEzine, anything, so you can collect their email addresses and send follow-up email. Get a (free) email programme like KeltzMail , it offers great functionality; you can use for mailing your prospects. Earning potential: your own mailing list is invaluable. Never, n e v e r, rush your website online! Think about what you are going to offer! Carefully plan every step you take. FREE RESOURCES Please note! There is no guarantee that these sites offer services that are of real value but I have found most of them interesting enough to bookmark and revisit.
